Shawna and Conquest

In 2007 a tiny, furry ball of energy entered my life. Conquest, a feisty, loving, and beautiful salt and pepper Schnauzer. From the beginning, our connection flavored my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. He had impact on almost everything I did. Our friendship became rich and deep.

Although he’d had his share of medical challenges along the way, none really concerned me until he was diagnosed with cancer. It was then that I had the realization: “Conquest is not immortal; there will be life without him.” It was at this point I upped my game of control and protection, a pattern that is very familiar to me.

I believed that I could control everything in my life and bend the natural order of things to my will. My learned behavior took its toll on me and on Conquest. My fur-love was like a little sponge taking on my anxiety. I didn’t want him to but I know he did.

In 2018 I began a deep exploration of myself, the only true control I had, which was flimsy at best. It has been partly by surrendering this ‘management’ of life that I have found a space in which I truly have influence. Along the way I have found a number of teachers and methodologies and it’s through these and my own work that I reconnected with Conquest in a more loving and less controlling way.
